17 Year Old Boxers Barred From Pro Ring In Senate Vote

Seventeen year old boxers and wrestlers were denied permission to appear professionally after a Senate debate on lowering the age limit from 18 to 17. The measure, limiting 17-year-olds to four two minute rounds, was voted down 106 to 38 with eight Republicans and two Democrats in favor. Democratic Senator Elmer F Quinn of New York City attacked the bill as promotions peddling flesh and said it would attract talent to Madison Square Garden. Senator Richard A Dicostanzo said it originated with the State Boxing Commission and Department of State, while Senator Francis J Mahoney warned of unsafe matchups for youths and said the bill helps promoters. Nat Rogers of Mike Jacobs’ 20th Century Sporting Club said he only learned of the bill from the papers. Jacobs was not in the city.
