A 9 foot long mixed breed named Bal awakened Victor Merle and his family in Blaheme by leaping on the bed as a fire broke out. The dog had been scheduled for death Monday by a veterinarian, but Merle chose to save Bal who then helped save his wife and two children from possible death.
Edward J. Murphy of 82 Hill Street faces trial set for Tuesday April 4 on leaving the scene of an accident. Police Justice Thomas J. OConnor scheduled the date after a mutual request by District Attorney Timothy F. OBrien and Murphy counsel Henry Baly. Murphy was arrested April 23 1948 for allegedly being the driver of a car that struck Regina Kelly and Arthur Snow on April 12 in Fourth Street.
The West Sand Lake area reports progress at Samaritan Hospital for Edgar Worthington and notes county Pomona meets Johnsonville Grange at 10 30 a m. Community groups host sewing classes and home projects with leaders cited. A Salem man, Charles Dillon, was injured in a Menands Bridge crash and treated at Samaritan Hospital.
A dinner party was tendered Sunday by Mrs. John W. Edwards of 34 Maple Avenue to honor Mrs. Margaret Goodell on her 61st birthday. Friends and family gathered at Edwards home to celebrate the event.

The Grace Methodist Church official board will convene at the church Saturday at 7 p.m. The Deerrick Home Bureau plans a meeting at Grange Hall this evening. Mrs. Jesse Frisbie is in Albany Hospital for observation and treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Herrington moved into their new home, the former Albert Phillips place. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Golden and daughter Patriza of Schenectady spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. William Reynolda. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bolander celebrated their twentieth wedding anniversary with a party Saturday evening, with forty eight guests, music, refreshments, and an anniversary cake themed display. Out of town guests came from Troy, South Cambridge, Groveside and West Hos sick.
