Soft Coal Stockpiles Grow Rapidly in Troy Area
Soft coal stockpiles in the Troy area have risen as last week’s settlement spurred reopening plans. Wilaoh Brothers Aetna Milla began recalling key workers, with about 350 employees expected back within a week. At Waterford’s Cloak Peabody bleachery, reverse operation started as coal supplies increased, returning 175 workers by week’s end. Republic Steel cited no orders yet, though 40–50 percent of its 200 workers were doing repair and maintenance. Only one coal conservation order remained in effect under Gov. Dewey’s emergency powers, with committees likely to persist until shortages ease. Industry leaders say coal flow is improving, though hard coal remains tighter day to day.
