Refugee ship incident in Palestine sparks mass flee

The Susanna, a 400 ton Italian vessel carrying about 800 Jewish refugees, ran aground near Gaza after escaping a British blockade. About 40 were captured on the beach and held in a temporary camp near Isdud, with 200 still aboard. Authorities planned to move detainees to Haifa and Cyprus camps while extensive security measures were tightened and a dusk curfew imposed in Jerusalem’s Jewish quarters.
