A Stephentown family of nine including five children is made homeless after flames destroy two homes in southern Rensselaer County. The Houghtalings and a Brainard couple faced loss while three young children were left in care with relatives as firefighters battled a rapidly spreading blaze around noon and again in the late afternoon.

Thirty one bay became charter members of Boy Scout Troop at St Augustine's Church during investiture ceremonies Monday night. John J. Kennedy represented Most Rev Edmund F. Gibbons, bishop of Albany Diocese. William Kornetkze and Salvadore Montanio won Second Class pins. Joseph Sorell is scoutmaster. Robert Baird chaired the ceremony. Luncheon followed and neckerchiefs will be blessed at upcoming rites.

Fire destroys Brainard home in Stephentown blaze
Rensselaer County Red Cross aided the Brainards and three guests after a 4 a.m. fire blamed on a defective chimney. The three youngest children had only their carried clothing, while older children joined parents in escape. Red Cross funded clothing, food, bedding, and medical care for Miss Houghtaling, who suffered shock. Firefighters reported lack of water prevented saving the building. some furniture and clothing were saved.
