Dewey Seeks Simplified State Soldier Ballot

Gov. Thomas E. Dewey urged New York legislature to pass a simple soldier vote law. The plan would let armed forces members send name and addresses to the secretary of state, who would forward postcards to the War Ballot Commission for mailing a ballot back to the voter. Dewey argued the proposal makes voting accessible for service members abroad and protects against constitutional issues and manipulation. He attacked federal plans for a blank soldier ballot and called for state and local vote inclusion.

The Governor stated that paper ballots have been shipped abroad under Washington direction and that authorities there are willing to transport them to meet specifications. He warned that repeating the 1942 43 obstruction strategy could block a plan to grant every state armed service member a vote if he desires it.
