Davis Resigns Over Food Policy and Control Disputes
Davis resigns as food administrator after clashing over policy and tight management of the wartime food program. He cited plans for a 1944 production drive and a broad educational push, urged by the President to quit now to allow a successor to steer the program. Roosevelt defended subsidy steps while stressing centralized price stabilization and a coordinated approach between food and price officials. Davis warned of difficulties in reaching the policy nerve center and outlined three pillars for a successful war food program: ample production, stronger government control, and a nationwide educational drive.
