Mechanicville votes to appeal Harris case over dismissal

Mechanicville Board of Education, by a 4 3 vote, will appeal a state Supreme Court ruling that the district erred in dismissing English teacher William Harris. The decision follows debate on due process in his April 30 1975 suspension for allegedly insubordinate conduct and possible alternatives to reinstatement or dismissal.

Clifton Park seeks town underwriting of Crescent Estates sewer

Town considered backing a $758000 sewer system for Crescent Estates South to serve a 206 acre Clifton Park Halfmoon site with 185 homes and townhouses. Developers say public financing would cut costs, but residents fear a dangerous precedent and reduced borrowing power.

Adirondack Bookmobile announces summer stops

The Southern Adirondack Library System Bookmobile will run a two week per stop summer schedule visiting 49 communities in Hamilton Saratoga Warren and Washington Counties with times at Calico Colony Denim and Plaid Grooms Corners Rosen's Store Jonesville and Quaker Springs Church. The Geyser Crest stop shifts to Wednesdays 10 45 a m to noon. Additional stops include Galway East Galway Greenfield Center Middle Grove Rock City Falls Rexford Clifton Knolls Half Moon Charlton Village Green and Easton with headquarters in Saratoga Glens Falls Ballston Spa for details. Niskayuna concert June 26 features Racing City Chorus Electric City Chorus and River Valley Chapter of Sweet Adelines to benefit Clover Patch Camp. Tickets from United Cerebral Palsy of Schenectady or Rotary Club members. The camp serves children from several counties.

Exhibit of commemorative plates in Mechanicville

Mechanicville District Public Library hosts an exhibit featuring commemorative plates from American history. Highlights include Barbara Fritchie on a sugar bowl, the liberty bell, Washington at command, Saratoga surrender, and Ft. Neilson. Mixed doubles exhibition at Kill Estates dedication

Team Two Clinches Berlin League Softball Title

Berlin Central Junior High School wraps its third season with Team 2 as champion. Team 2 posted 11 wins and 3 losses under captain Mike Loguidice with Donna Sidley as pitcher and Kelly Gardner and Anne Herman as catchers. Team 1 finished second and Team 3 third.

Registration for Mechanicville School District summer swim program runs June 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. in the high school cafeteria. More than 100 neighbors and friends gathered at Helen Hirahara’s Round Lake home to celebrate her 80th birthday. Hirahara, a Round Lake tax collector, is a recognized artist and musician who played organ at United Methodist Church for years.

Flag Day ceremonies mark lodge’s 60th anniversary

Mechanicville observed Flag Day with a Sons of Italy program led by Mayor John Fascia. Theodore LaVigna announced the lodge will observe its 60th anniversary in mid- September. Pasquele DeMarco directs a membership drive aiming for 60 new members.

Schuylerville Budget Wins Narrow Victory

Schuylerville Central School District budget of 3 087 145 dollars was approved by 153 to 140 with a 1.9 percent increase over last year. Voter turnout was among the history’s largest for school meetings. Incumbent William Hanehan won a five yearBoard of Education seat 130 votes to 52 for Paul Bodnar. The board also approved 8 000 dollars for the Schuylerville Public Library to be raised through school taxes by a 134 to 19 vote.

Schuylerville Honors 90 Girls at Inter scholastic Banquet

The Schuylerville Girls Athletic Department hosted its 13th annual banquet in the primary school cafetorium, honoring 90 junior varsity and varsity girls and their mothers. Kerry Haley and Fawn O'Brien earned top honors as leading scorers in field hockey, with Linda Cook and Vicki Young noted as high scorers for the Schuylerville Fillies basketball team. The undefeated intramural volleyball team the 76ers, including Brenda Holmes and others, was also recognized.

Mechanicville residents win graduate traineeships

Two Mechanicville residents are among seven recipients of graduate traineeships at the College of Saint Rose. Elizabeth Ponzillo of 183 Saratoga Ave and Carol Kardash of RD 3 receive funds toward master’s study in learning disabilities and the emotionally handicapped. The traineeships cover tuition and fees and include a $500 stipend.

Village Justice Kenneth W. Fitzgerald reports May docket totals: 64 cases handled, including 51 vehicle and traffic and 13 criminal. Dismissals 11, unconditional 4, conditional 1. Fines collected total $993 with portions split between village and State.
