Reasons for Travel Ban
James Marlow outlines why travel by rail will tighten as the government urges people to stay home. Troops returning from Europe and workers displaced by cutbacks will crowd civilian trains, spurring planned shifts at reception centers and multiple moves before final home arrival into late 1945 and early 1946.

Wartime rail use shifts to support Pacific war effort
The government redirected rail space to train troops for up to 45 days then send them to staging areas near the Pacific. Wartime conventions were banned to free train capacity, saving about 2 million passenger miles and preventing 30,000 people from attending events. A large freight program bound for the Pacific filled remaining rail space to aid logistics.
