Ration Rush Spreads Through Troy Shoe Stores
A stamp No. 17 ration rush engulfs Troy shoe shops as crowds buy furiously until closing time. Stores report record volumes, minimal summer stock, and a shift to fall and winter footwear while some customers began exploiting the system. No Flurry In Sight at Tax Deadline
The final installment on the 1942 federal income tax under the old system passed with little public rush. Taxpayers at Troy Post Office showed steady demand for money orders, though lines shortened yesterday. Treasury figures anticipate 3.5 billion dollars in income tax collection this month while notices delayed by printing caused late payments. The Army received tax guidance to adjust returns, and the new withholding system will soon shift pay-to-go, expanding Bureau staff by up to 15,000, largely women.
