The West Sand Lake area gains improved mail delivery as Rural Route 3 realigns Rural Route 1. West Sand Lake becomes an intermediate Rural Route 1 office with its own postal identity. The change serves Highway 43 residents and keeps Averill Park as the postal address. Rep. Carleton J. King, R Saratoga Springs, relayed the plan from the New York Regional Office of the Post Office Department.

Fire crews led by F. B. Peck Hose Co fought a stubborn dump fire at the Mohawk River junction with Old Champlain Canal. Fire under the debris remains active despite bulldozing Thursday, with dirt and water failing to extinguish the blaze. Firemen monitored the site overnight from 9 p.m. Friday into Saturday.
