Mayor Jehan J. Ahern signed the measure after a public hearing at City Hall as the local law creating a tax arrears board to handle future compromises moved toward enactment. The obstacle to signing was cleared yesterday.
In Surrogate s Court one of the most unusual matters to come before the court involves the Setters who claim an infant died 142 days after birth due to Negligence by New York Power and Light Corp. The 12 day old son of Mr and Mrs Frank Ahern died Feb 24 1949 after gas poisoning at 18 A Munro Court Vanderheyden Housing Project. Lawyers Jones and Jones say multiple actions will be filed in the Supreme Court for Rensselaer County seeking damages in a case expected to test gas liability and corporate responsibility.
Merrill E. Zweig, Averill Park Central School board president, presented athletic achievement letters to about 25 pupils at an award banquet hosted by the Athletic Council. Girls in sports received special awards. Ned Hark-Hess, lacrosse coach at RPI, and principal Ivo spoke. a film from the 1948 Olympics trip was shown. About 125 people attended dinner served in the cafeteria under Mrs Eva Lerch’s supervision.
Rev. and Mrs. Robert G. Mallery of Troy were honored guests at a dinner party at the Air Port Inn marking their 128th wedding anniversary. Immediate family attended, including two daughters. Mrs Mallery’s mother Mrs Margaret Gregor of Averill Park hosted the event.
The Ahern family seeks extensive damages after an incident on February 13 that killed an infant and affected several members. Mrs Ahern asks 26000, Frank Ahern 26000 plus 6000 for services and care, Mack F Ahern 15000, five thousand for David K Ahern alleged poisoning, while an administrator claims 26000 for the baby.
The eighth annual Boy Scout demonstration by the Catholic Youth Organisation will be held tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Albany Diocese. Rev. Stephen J. Meany will deliver the sermon as 118 Scouts receive the Ad Altare Del Award after meeting rank and written exam requirements. The event includes renewal of the Scout Laws and Oath, Baptismal Vow, and consecration to the Blessed Virgin, followed by solemn benediction.
