U S Sugar Policy Renewal Faces House Vote
The 1948 Sugar Act extension, a three year renewal set to expire December 31, would keep quotas above world prices by about 40 a ton for foreign buyers. House Agriculture Committee backed the bill 30 to 3 amid leaks of foreign lobbying and consumer concerns. The plan shifts 300,000 tons from Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico to Florida and Louisiana, maintaining a 62 to 38 domestic foreign mix. tariff and excise revenue would total about 170 to 177 million dollars over three years with producer payments near 90 to 94 million. Critics call the extension subsidies to foreign producers and raise prices for American households, while supporters say it preserves a stable domestic sugar industry and ample supply.
