Cut Total Ration Increase Hits Beef Prices

Washington reports the Office of Price Administration raised ration points for nearly all beef types by one to three points per pound starting Sunday. Popular beef steaks will cost 11 to 12 points per pound, a 38 to 37 percent rise, while other meats see minor changes. The move pushes consumers toward pork veal and lamb or accepting less beef.

Point Changes Add Canned Milk and Cheese to Ration List

The red coupon ration adds canned milk and certain soft cheeses for the first time in last night's order announced Tuesday. Beet point values rise due to market scarcity from military needs and lower beef slaughter in April and May. Officials say civilian supplies exist partly because the Army held back purchases and plan to resume large scale beef buys to meet soldier needs. Farmers and ranchers holding cattle for higher prices and feeding cattle to heavier weights contributed to beef shortfalls. The new points likely hold until July 3, with no changes to fats and oils. Civilian meals today are about 45 percent beef, 45 percent pork, 10 percent other meats.
