Civilian Workers Unwelcome In Some War Boom Areas
Four field consultants from the National Catholic Community Service Branch of the United Service Organizations report widespread hostility to civilian war workers in boom areas. They note居 local residents fear overcrowding, rising rents, and interference with normal life, with hostility strongest toward women with children and their need for childcare. Some regions, especially West and Southwest, are praised for hospitality to service members and families, while New England and other areas show anxious attitudes toward permanent settlement after the war.
