Industry Adapts as Peace Production Looms
Washington industry, aided by a 16.3 billion dollar cut in war contracts in the first half of 1945, reports progress toward reconversion. Automakers, appliance makers, and producers of home goods, office machinery, and plumbing equipment are highlighted as showing strong gains while officials caution on exact civilian return timelines. June output slipped despite a reduced war order, with much of the drop tied to shorter work periods and planned cuts in programs. The reduction affected about 2,300 plants as reconversion proceeds.
