Court Upholds Bove Fay Convictions
The Court of Appeals upheld the extortion and conspiracy convictions of New York City labor leaders James Bove and Joseph F Fay. The decision, made with most judges concurring though two were absent, followed their 1944 charges for extorting about $703 000 from contractors working on the New York City Delaware Aqueduct. Fay, vice president of the International Union of Operating Engineers, and Bove, secretary of the International Hod Carriers Building and Common Laborers Union, had prior court battles and were previously acquitted on kickback charges but later implicated in union treasury theft. The ruling also upheld Louis B Brookins 20 Syracuse, first degree murder conviction for the October 1945 murder of Helen Capote in Rochester, with Brookins set to die at Sing Sing in the week of September 9.
