Relative price rise frames as savings for housewives
Albany broker Joseph McDermott told Mechanicville Rotary that U S food spending declined from 26 percent of income in 1947 to 18.1 percent, leaving more for autos TVs and leisure. He argued processing gains free wives from prep work, reduced prices help food merchants, and foreign comparisons show Russia and France devote more of income to food than the United States. He noted independent grocers now hold about 55 percent of food sales after tough years.
