27th Army Division in Saipan War Coverage Reveals Irish Roots
AP reports on the 27th Infantry Division’s actions in Saipan with roots traced to New York and a history dating back to World War I. The piece notes its nicknames the Fighting Irish and Appleknockers, mentions earlier campaigns on Makin and Eniwetok, and highlights commands from Aaron Burr to later generals. The report frames the unit as one of the oldest continuously active divisions, with ties to the Rainbow Division heritage.

27th Infantry Division History and Reorganization Background
The 27th Infantry Division, mustered out April 1, 1919, reformed as a New York National Guard unit. It trained annually at Camp Smith and Pine Camp, with officers praising state support. After reentry to the Regular Army, it completed early basic training at Fort McLellan and moved to California in 1941 and Hawaii in 1952 for defense duties. The division drew from Troy, Albany, and upstate New York, with growing non-New York personnel yet remaining essentially a New York organization.
