Paratroopers Drown as Gulf Training Exercise Goes Wrong
Troopers from Fort Benning faced a tragedy when three paratroopers drowned and seven remained missing after a Gulf of Mexico training jump. The group of 116 jumped from carrier planes off an island, all wearing quick release parachutes and Mae West life belts. Rescue boats and naval blimps from Pensacola aided the search, with additional aircraft and army units joining the effort.
