Albany politics watchers see the Liberal Party naming Senator Howard Nolan as its November candidate. Mayor Erastus Corning backs a state project to burn garbage for heat, and Nolan calls for an eight year mayoral limit while courting a broad coalition.
The General Electric plants at Fort Edward and Hudson Falls stopped using PCBs on June 23 but officials warn river contamination will persist as residual PCB deposits continue to leach from cooling machinery. Cleanup funding will come from GE and New York State after studies finish.
The Sons of Italy announce their annual outing on August 7 at the club grounds starting at noon with hot dogs hamburgers raw clams chowder and beverages a steak roast at 4 30 p m Tickets are available at the clubrooms or from the outing committee including Theodore Lavigna Angelo Decrescente Gennaro Bove Pasquale DeMarco and others Pasquale DeMarco also says the lodge will meet monthly through summer next meeting July 21 at 7 30 p.m.
An Albany man is injured and three others were arrested after a Sunday shooting at Morton and Elizabeth. John Hooks, 23, of Osborne Street, was treated for a left arm injury and listed in good condition. Arrested: Melvin Hudgins, 29, for first degree assault and possession of a loaded firearm. Frank Edmunds, 32, for possession of a loaded firearm. Francine Royals, 34, for possession of a weapon. All three face Albany Police Court arraignment.
Saratoga County Sheriffs arrested Al Cargill of Stillwater on an aggravated harassment charge after Mechanicville officers linked a reported burglary at Hemstreet Park to a suspect seen in Price Chopper. The arrest followed a 2:20 a.m. complaint from David DiSiena and a chase of leads including Cargill’s estranged wife.
Mechanicville police stopped Gina Chiara and two friends at 12:55 a.m. after a possible dine and dash at Tancredi's. Chiara allegedly harassed Joann Winarowski and yanked Winarowski's car antenna, bending it. Chiara was charged with Criminal Mischief fourth degree and released on $50 bail for a July 14 court appearance.
Gladys Tucker of Buffalo drove off from an Albany police station with her husband on the roof of the car striking two officers. Both officers suffered bruises and were treated at St Peter's Hospital. Mrs Tucker, 27, jailed on disorderly conduct and reckless driving and later bailed. Husband Carrington, 33, held on disorderly conduct and reckless endangerment after trying to swing a crow bar at her.
Calvin P. Otto of Wood Frong Corp leads Ephemera Society efforts in Hoosick Falls and London while planning a North American branch and a Bennington Museum exhibit Aug 24 Sept 12. The show features posters from 1640 to World War I era and rare tickets, cards, and leaflets illustrating history through fleeting printed items.
A Schuylerville Central School study shows 5.3 percent more seniors entering military service this year than last, with 12.3 percent of the 1977 class enlisting. About 40 percent will attend higher education and 91 percent overall have post graduate plans, down slightly from 90 percent in 1975.
