Philippines and United States negotiate aid and trade terms
The article notes Congress approving 620 million dollars for reconstruction and war damage claims, plus a 400 million direct government loan and 250 million loan via the Trotan Import Export Bank for Philippine projects. It mentions eight years of duty free imports, then tariff alignment with other nations over two years, and a push to allow American business to operate on the same terms. Debate frames this as American imperialism amid a Philippine constitutional change and defense considerations, with bases and national defense in play. Other notes include a Pompeii bakery stamp on low weight bread.
