Home Casualties Exceed Battle
The National Safety Council reports American home front casualties far exceed battle losses. Armed forces dead, wounded, missing or captured through Jan 1 1944 total 139 858, civilians killed or injured in US accidents 18 690 000. War office figures add 32 078 killed and 45 595 wounded, 32 478 missing, 29 707 captured. civilian toll 190 000 killed and 18 500 000 injured. The council notes no implied equivalence with frontline danger, only the waste of manpower from accidents and the need to cut them. It estimates 800 000 000 man-days lost to production due to accidents, enough to build 38 000 heavy embers.
