Governor Dewey Seeks Expanded Local Tax Powers

In a legislative message Governor Dewey urged the Federal Government to turn over excise tax powers to the states. He advocated granting broad taxing authority to all cities and villages, allowing them to levy taxes relinquished by the Federal Government, while noting the state's aim to protect tax freedom and limit local taxation. The conference endorsed expanding the permissive local nuisance tax to all municipalities and urged a constitutional amendment to broaden city and village taxing powers.
