Albany Bills Target Minority Party Power Shift
A measure introduced in the Albany Legislature by Assemblyman Orlo M. Brees, a Republican, seeks to curb minority party influence by requiring candidates in statewide elections to be enrolled in the dominant party and barring on primary ballots any candidate enrolled in another party except for judicial or non-salaried offices. The bill also would allow a two party nomination under certain conditions. President Roosevelt carried American Labor and Liberal Party votes in November, helping him win the state.
