Melrose Trapper Nets Nearly 200 Foxes in One Month
Trapper Leslie E. Smith of Melrose and his wife Pearl Smith report catching 127 foxes and 41 by themselves in about thirty days. Thieves stole 27 foxes from his traps, plus four raccoons, within a ten mile radius. Smith aims to curb fox predation, helps wildlife restocking, and notes fur demand for ski troops. He uses up to 31 traps daily, skinning foxes in 12 minutes each, and cites last year’s 71 foxes as a contrast to peak years.

Rensselaer County officials seek changes to New York State’s reimbursement system for town court costs. They argue towns lose revenue when deputy sheriffs pursue traffic violations before justices of the peace, unlike cases where state officers are the complainants. The State Sheriffs Association plans joint action with the Association of Towns as the Rensselaer county briefing notes years of revenue loss since postwar police staffing cuts.
