Body Sealed In Cave Forever Dolgeville
James Mitchell, a 23-year-old cave explorer from Winthrop Massachusetts, died trapped in Schroeder’s cave near Dolgeville after a cave-in sealed the cavern. Rescue attempts ended after three dynamite blasts worsened the collapse and left the body unreachable. Two Washington cave experts fled moments before the final collapse, and officials decided not to attempt further recovery. James Mitchell had entered the cave with Hedy Miller and Charles Bennett, but only Miller and Bennett escaped. Mitchell’s body remains 300 feet from the entrance in a 100-foot-deep pit.
