Senate Approves Bill to Change Spring Primary
Albany 21-Tha Senate passed last night 2010 6 bill which would eliminate the spring primary and secure when presidential electors are elected. The bill opposed by ten Democrats would provide that the primary be held in June instead of April. The measure went to the Assembly sponsored by Senator Charles O Burney of Buffalo. The timing would save $1,000,000 in a presidential election year. The senate also approved a companion bill 24-20 sending to the Assembly a Burney measure requiring election inspectors in large districts to place on the register the names of those registered at the preceding general election and extending automatic registration to those who voted in the previous general election. Senate Democratic Leader Wm. X. Quinn opposed the action arguing it would extend campaigns and nominate state legislators before the ticket head had been chosen.
