Japs Kill German Catholic Missionaries in New Guinea
German and Dutch Catholic missionaries and five nuns were imprisoned by Japanese forces in New Guinea. Three Roman Catholic missionaries and the five nuns, all German or Dutch, reached Allied bases after a four month trek. Father Manion, tied to a pole and later forced to run a 20 ton schooner, and Father Cruysberg’s party survived by foraging, escaping, and receiving Allied aid. Two German missionaries were killed, and Japanese troops looted and abused prisoners as the long, perilous journey toward Australian lines unfolded.
