Michigan study urges consolidation of 6,274 districts
A two year commission study in Lansing recommends merging Michigan’s 6,274 districts into about 250 four class districts with at least 3 million dollars in property and capacity for 390 seventh through twelfth grade students. The plan would be enacted by a simple majority and keep existing debts with their original areas. Dr. Eugene B. Elliott, state superintendent, called the proposal a major step toward modernizing education.
