Italian armistice terms spark U.S. debate in Congress
Washington Representative Vito Marcantonio urged official recognition of Italy as a full ally to secure lend lease aid. He clashed with Secretary of State Grew over armistice terms, asserting Pantelleria and colonies could be kept by Britain and Italy’s future frontiers unsettled while the Allies gain power over Italy’s internal life.

Yanks Save Two Soldiers After 23 Days in Barn
Two American soldiers from an infantry battalion were rescued after 23 days in a barn near Herrlisheim. Private Warren Maze, 24, and Private Richard Hartman, 35, endured hunger and fear while German forces occupied the area. They survived by finding corn, frozen potatoes, and a jar of wine, aided by American occupation of the village. Maze, whose wife Edna lives in Catron, and Hartman, from Lancaster, were eventually found when American jeeps approached and the men heard allied voices.
