Perfect Timing Marked Cape Gloucester Assault
CBS correspondent William J. Dunn witnessed the Cape Gloucester landing on New Britain and described it as one of the most perfectly coordinated land air and naval operations of the Pacific war. He detailed the bombardment by warships and Liberator bombers and noted the first Marines ashore at 7 42 a.m with heavy air support and a smoke screen masking docks. After two enemy air counterattacks many Allied planes were lost but the operation reinforced Western New Britain control and disrupted Japanese lines. A separate Montour Falls report said 79 year old David Littel died after a hit and run incident while he walked from his stalled car.
