High Court Votes to Allow 18-Year-Old Voting Access
The Supreme Court split over whether Congress may lower the voting age to 18 for federal and state elections. Justices Black, Douglas, Brennan, White, and Marshall supported broader federal power to set 18 as the minimum, while Burger, Stewart, and Blackmun favored state control under the Constitution. The decision prompts calls for nationwide registration efforts ahead of 1972 elections.
