Albany Mayor Blames State for Tax Jump
Albany mayor charged the state with causing a tax surge of 421 per 1000 assessed value in 1944 and named State Comptroller Frank C Moore as responsible. Erastus Corning 2nd said the increase came from state actions. Moore denied a city refund request of 144000 for next year and called Albany fiscal practices unwise and illegal. Albany finance is under inquiry in Dewey's probe of Democratic control of Albany County. Corning noted the 1944 rate would have been 3463 per 1000, 32 cents lower, if the refunding were allowed.
