Government Welcomes Returnees and War Office Prospects
The Gripsolhm passengers, Americans released after 18 months in Japanese captivity, received a warm welcome from government officials across agencies handling Far East war areas. Recruiters from Army, Navy, State, Strategic Services, and OWI chased the passengers in New York, seeking to hire them into government work, while the FBI blocked some offers. In broader politics, Sen Josiah W Bailey contemplates forming a Southern Democratic party, leveraging his long record of New Deal support though he also pursues efforts to reshape New Deal programs. Other items note aviation expansion, Small Business and War Plants leadership questions, and ongoing renegotiation debates affecting textile firms, with censorship policy evolving toward a postwar era.
