Erupting Volcano On Jan Mayen Evacuates 39 Norwegians
The Sept 20 Beerenberg eruption on the Jan Mayen arctic island created a four mile crack and sent 39 Norwegians to evacuate. Lava volumes reach 150 million tons in five days and expand the island from 150 to over 160 square miles, with lava rivers, steam, and ash clouds up to 20,000 feet. The largest river is The New Mardoela near Duffin glacier.
