After capitulation Berlin: chaos, raids, and forced vice
The piece describes Berlin after the capitulation with thousands of refugees and lost children. It notes a harsh, cheerless city where access to cigarettes, candy, and entry to venues often depended on Allied soldiers. Prostitution was widespread, with 12 000 known and 7 000 clandestine sex workers. After the US Army moved in, about 30 000 brothels closed and weekly raids in the American sector seized 317 women. First offenders faced warnings, second offenders fingerprinting and photos, third offenses imprisonment, with medical exams and treatment for infected women and 1800 beds in detention wards.
