New Canal In Panama Proposed
A six year study by the Atlantic-Pacific Inter-Oceanic Canal Study Commission recommends a new sea level canal across Panama parallel to the existing passage. The $2.88 billion project would take 14 years and require treaties with the United States and Panama, facing budgetary and sovereignty hurdles amid ecological and diplomatic concerns. Nuclear blasting was dismissed in favor of conventional excavation due to safety and treaty issues.
