Rope Origins and Early Rope-Making Facts
The piece notes rope has served essential uses since ancient times with early ropes knotted from leather and bark. Egyptians likely made ropes from vegetable fibers, while abaca or Manila hemp from the Philippines became prized. Before the 19th century ropework was done by hand in ropewalks, but modern fibers are now spun into slivers, yarns, and eventually twisted into rope through mechanized processes.
