Area Freight Drivers Win Wage Increase and Benefits
Over 100 long haul and local drivers, most based in Troy and Albany, won raises and a new benefit plan in a two year contract with Local 294 Teamsters and the Highway Transportation Association of New York. The pact retroactive to August 3 raises hourly rates to 5.43 and adds a $1,000 life insurance policy and $25 weekly hospital and medical benefits. Over the road drivers receive a 0.5 cent per mile raise, with total wages increased from 1.35 to 5.43 an hour equivalent. The agreement includes arbitration on wage disputes and a two year term with reopeners. A threatened strike of about 1,000 drivers was averted.
