Swimmers Invited to Hill Pool Swimathon for Cancer Fight

Poor weather reduced turnout as swimmers are invited to the Hill pool next Wednesday to compete for more than 900 dollars in prizes. The event runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Swimathon proceeds aiding cancer research and treatment.

Festival of arts Saturday in Nassau

Nassau hosts a visual parade of crafts baked goods antiques and ceramics at the Nassau Free Library and Town Hall coordinated by the Nassau Bicentennial Committee. Maulden Ridge School of Art displays pottery and painting at Grace Methodist Church with twenty local organizations and refreshments for sale. Mary Davidson chairs.

Vermont suspends license of broker Staab

Vermont officials suspended the real estate broker license of John J. Staab for six months for conduct deemed untrustworthy and lacking good character. Staab Real Estate, Inc. license also suspended for six months beginning in September. Staab had been named to the state Lottery Commission by Gov. Snelling earlier this year.

Budget approved by Berlin voters after two defeats

Berlin Central School district voters approved a $2.5 million budget by 452 to 278. Austin Montgomery said the budget was trimmed by 3250, with 14000 of the 25000 cut from faculty salaries by hiring less experienced teachers. The package raises taxes about 6 percent, with rates likely from 36 per 1000 in Stephentown to 16 per 1000 in Berlin. A fall regatta at Saratoga Lake is set for Sept 3-4 with fleets including Thistle and Laser.

Sand Lake readies 100 percent reassessment plan with state aid talks

Sand Lake officials moved toward a full 100 percent property reassessment after a state report. Thomas LaRose of the Board of Equalization outlined costs at 30 to 40 dollars per parcel. The town, with about 2800 parcels, seeks state and intermunicipal cooperation to speed data collection and contracting. A Sept. 15 meeting with state officials was scheduled to advance the plan.

Rensselaer Man Arraigned After Bridge Shooting

Lawrence Ward of 202 Columbia Street Rensselaer appeared in city court arraigned on four counts of reckless endangerment one count of fourth degree criminal mischief one count of resisting arrest and one count of third degree criminal possession of a stolen weapon Ward was released to his attorney Paul Cheeseman after being treated for gunshot wounds in the groin and right arm suffered Aug 14 on the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Police say Ward threatened officers with a knife which was recovered under the bridge following the twilight confrontation. A preliminary hearing was set for the following Tuesday.

Planning board questions enforcement powers of site reviews in East Greenbush

East Greenbush planning board pressed for enforcement authority over site plan reviews. Questions arose about projects like a Citizen Genet Middle School area apartment complex and a Route 9 and 2n restaurant, with Wacholder citing lack of required planning board review. Both were accepted due to existing buses and Vermont approval in one case. Bennington Vermont hosts This is Ephemera an exhibit drawn from the Ephemera Society collection. Curated pieces include 19th century tickets proclamations and ads such as an 1816 lottery ticket an 1879 Buckingham Palace program and an 1834 pig roast ad. The display runs daily 1 to 6 p.m. through September 12.

Pittsfield Man Killed in Single Engine Plane Crash

Irving Siegel of Pittsfield Massachusetts died when his Piper Cub crashed into woods near New Lebanon Columbia County early today. He was alone aboard en route from Albany to Pittsfield. Authorities from state police and the FAA investigated the wreck site. GILBERT SPEVACK appointed associate director for outpatient services Albany Medical Center Hospital and assistant to the dean for ambulatory services Albany Medical College. He will oversee daily outpatient operations and coordinate long range planning for outpatient care and education. He has served as assistant director since 1974 and joined the staff in 1972.
