Surgeon pioneers brain operation to cure parkinsonism
Dr Roland M Klemme, a young neurosurgeon, performed a groundbreaking Parkinson’s operation in 1904, removing a brain section to relieve severe symptoms. The patient’s mother consented after hope outweighed risk, and 19 days post op she walked again after 14 years bedridden. The Klemme method now shows 65 percent complete rehabilitation, with 10 percent fairly good results and 18 percent failures, drawing patients from 49 countries.

Dr Kiemme warns many canes may not develop severe disease if common colds are prevented. He notes 98 percent of his operation patients had prior influenza or encephalopathy, both spread by coughing and sneezing. Cautions include shaking palsy from brain vessel hardening, and higher risks past age 50. He has seven pioneering neurosurgical procedures, books, articles, and honors including the medal of the city of Turin.
