Firemen Respond To Six Alarms Over Weekend in Watervliet

Watervliet firefighters were kept busy over the weekend with six alarms, two false. At 5 15 p m Saturday Pumper 2 under the direction of Battalion Chief William Tracey responded to Mobil Gas Station between Second Avenue and Broadway where a car was reported on fire.

Paparian Heads Unit of AF Drive in 1968 United Fund

Albert V. Paparian appointed section chairman of the Manufacturing Wholesale and Service Division for the 1968 United Fund campaign. He heads Watervliet Arsenal Small Business Office and serves as small business and labor surplus adviser. The drive will cover about 60 companies with 23 workers each, starting around Sept 28. Fire incidents followed later with multiple false alarms and a small blaze on 14th Street, plus a tree house fire and a flare incident.

Playground attendance and basketball results reported

Attendance at four city playgrounds over four days reached 3 484 with registrations at Brotherhood 1 240 Clinton Park 850 Port Schuyler 625 and 14th Street 769. Intermediate League final standings show Port Schuyler and 14th Street tied 3 1 0.000 and Brotherhood 0 4 0.000. In the senior league 14th Street defeated Brotherhood 110 to 54 and remained undefeated at 4–0.

John M Gardner directed the program as Valerie Falzo won the Walter P Quackenbush Award and John Smith received the Rev Donald W Hunt Memorial Bible. Nancy Richards earned the Diane Powell Memorial Bible honor while Walter Fonda received a cross for devotion to the school and church.

New Federal Wage Cuts Jobs, Says NFIB

The National Federation of Independent Business claims over 588000 jobs have been lost since the February 1.40 per hour federal minimum wage took effect. It notes a 12 percent drop in employment across 54308 members and warns losses are rising as small firms trim least skilled staff.

Fire damages apartment at 301 14th Street and smoke hits neighbor

Fire crews responded to a blaze at 301 14th Street early Saturday. The fire caused smoke and water damage to the occupied unit and smoke damage to the adjoining building at 303 14th Street. No injuries were reported as residents evacuated and returned. Chief James Halpin led the operation with Pumpers 2 and 3 and Truck 1 on site.

An annual door to door fund drive to fight cancer for Green Island begins at 6 p.m. tomorrow with 20 teen aged girls canvassing the village. The campaign is run with the Albany County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
