Police Seek 25 Year Retirement Policy Shift
Police officials at the Grand Union Hotel in Saratoga urged abolition of the 35 year State Retirement System for officers and sought inclusion of a police pension plan in the legislative program. They argued policing is 30 percent more hazardous and that many cannot serve 25 years due to physical demands. Governor Lehman had vetoed a plan, but police claim costs would be about 513000, shared by municipalities and officers. Local pensions exist in communities like Saratoga Springs, but new members since 1940 fall under the state system.
