Gas Station Becomes Flower Stand in Pittsburg
Eddie Hwert’s gasoline station on the edge of Pittsburg’s golden triangle now mixes fuel with plants. Gasoline rationing pushed dealers out, so Hwert began selling peppers cabbage and tomato plants this spring. Customers buy plants, and he earns more from them than regular gas sales. Knorr, inspired by a florist, supplies the plants to service trucks. The fast plant turnover keeps soot off the plants and draws curious customers who end up purchasing.
