Debated Defense Merger Faces Constitutional Hurdles
Washington discusses plans to consolidate Army Navy and air power into a single Defense Department. Critics warn it would require constitutional changes and concentrate power, eroding democratic balance. The current Joint Chiefs of Staff and informal Chief of Staff arrangements are cited as more democratic.
Debate on Joint Chiefs headlined by wartime leaders
The piece questions merger of armed services into a single top staff, arguing four leaders form a strong team while probing why full unification is urged. It notes unified command at front and home, plus public pushback against dismantling service identities. A Navy recruit from FP, 118th Street, has joined and placed on inactive list.
