Forest Fire Near Lock 9 Extinguished
A forest fire burned for hours near Lock 9 at the Forge Canal in Rotterdam threatening homes. Over 75 volunteer firefighters fought the blaze, covering more than 300 acres, with smoke visible for miles. Departments from Esat Glenville Rotterdam Junction Pattersonviks and Schenectady aided. Scotia Naval Supply Depot foamite protected three gasoline tanks along the NY Central tracks. State Police and four Schenectady County sheriff’s units assisted. Fire warden Edward M. Gower thanked volunteers for preventing broader homelessness.
