Firemen Hours Bill Vetoed in Albany
Governor Dewey vetoed the Firemen's Hours Bill, citing manpower shortages and local control concerns. The measure would have limited firemen to 24 hours of work in a 48 hour period, with exceptions for emergencies, and would require time be paid within ten days after emergencies. Cities warned adoption would force personnel or salary cuts and threaten essential services. The veto followed opposition from the New York State Conference of Mayors and the Citizens’ Union of New York City.
