Confirmation Rites Held in Atlantic City Churches

Confirmation rites were held across Atlantic City churches with hundreds of candidates. Bishop William A. Sealy conferred the sacrament at Our Lady of Victory and St Patrick’s, with Rev. Cale B. Vaughan Rev. William C. Martin and others assisting. The final class at Sacred Heart numbered nearly 100, with uniforms in navy blue red and white and a procession from the rectory to Head Park. A luncheon followed at Our Lady of Victory Clubhouse and dinner at the school dining hall.

Fires Keep Troy Firefighters Busy All Night

A series of alarm calls kept Troy firefighters rushing to blazes across the city. Early incidents included a garbage fire on Wisit Street and Fith Avenue, followed by smaller fires on Hutton Street Seventeenth, Hursick Ninth, and Marvin Avenue Cottage Street. The departments responded with pump units and squad wagon as the night wore on.

Utility Employees Get Raise In New York Utilities

Federal arbitration awards a 20 cent per hour wage increase for Utility Employees in multiple Columbia County townships retroactive to last December. The 11 locals of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers sought 30 cents plus 10 cents premium for high voltage work, but arbitrator John B. Dwyer ruled a 20 cent rise to July 1, 1948, to remedy an inequity with the regional average. Wages for the company now total 1.15 dollars per hour plus the 20 cent uplift.

Three Defendants Receive Bail in Sugar Case

Three defendants convicted in a sugar rationing conspiracy were freed yesterday in New York on $5,000 bail each pending appeal. Harold Gottfried, former president of Pure Rock Mineral Springs Corp. William Stanton, former OPA investigator. Joseph Forman, Ulster County official and former Kings County corporation counsel. were granted bail. Gottfried and Stanton received prison terms. Forman got one year and $5,000 bail. the third defendant faced related sentencing.
