River Street Fire Drives Six Families From Home
Six families fled early yesterday when a blaze at 194-196-198 River Street damaged a newsroom at 196 River Street and spread to upper floors. Firefighters, aided by drivers of a New York Central trailer crew, evacuated residents as flames contaminated the store and rear offices. No exact damage tally was given. Chief Carl A. Smith led the response with police support under night conditions.

Auto Thief Back To Prison After Sanity Question
A former patient from Hudson River State Hospital was ordered returned to Dannemora Prison to serve a sentence for car theft. Masterson, 24, challenged a prior conviction via a writ of error, but Judge DeForest denied the petition after experts found him sane at the time of events and guilty pleas in 1936, 1947, and 1957 amid a string of charges and escapes.
